Thoroughly enjoyed your article and it reminds us how interconnected this world is and that managing a pandemic, particularly one so virualant and deadly as Covid-19 requires good data and analysis . Here is hoping we can get to doing the amount of testing that is needed so as to be able to properly manage this problem.

Coronavirus and social distancing are both strange animals. I find those who live physically closest to me checking list of those who are physically farther away (200 miles or more) are checking in more. it makes me wonder why we don’t do so all the time. Why do we need a crisis to make us compassionate and empathetic?

I fully agree!!! In the last 10 years the reliance and addiction to electronic media benifits have been far outweighted by the downsides. It has went from being an extremely useful tool to an addiction where social skills have been seriously erroded. There is more negativity about everything due to electronic media sources than any pandemic ever.

Very interesting article! I can definitely relate to feeling like Zoom has taken over my life. Definitely looking forward to be able to collaborate with others in-person. In the meantime, I’ll take your advice and try to come up with alternatives whenever possible.

This message is a very useful perspective on our current digital reliance of zoom meetings. I am currently taking three online classes that require that I join weekly Zoom meetings for. Since only one out of those three classes requires me to show myself on the camera, I’m able to multitask during the other two class’ Zooms, which is a nice break from having to sit still and stare at a screen. I am able to listen to my professors’ lectures while washing dishes or folding laundry. This allows me to still absorb the information given since I remain on mute and hidden from the camera view throughout the Zoom class meeting.

Love this advice. Will try it

Invite your loneliness over for dinner. Have a conversation with your loneliness. Literally say to it, “So, I see that you’re here. What can I do for you? I’d like to learn from you.”

Well written and excellent article. Thank you for the reminder of how technology and why the news is so addictive.

Thanks for your article. I also found myself checking the news more often that ever in my life and wondering: how did this became so automatic?
So in simplified terms, you are saying that I was checking the news so often because it’s connected with my survival instinct? Makes sense…

An excellent article about this heartbreaking murder of an innocent man, who was trying just o be left alone. Your point about the need for empathy is critical. How anyone could apply pressure to Mr. Floyd’s neck for over 8 minutes, shows a complete inability to be empathic. Horrible.

    Tony
Thank you for sharing these insights with us. I was inspired by these snippets to start reading your book ‘Screened in’ and find it incredibly useful, informative and thoughtful and am recommending it to my friends and family. It’s also very timely given the enforced digital lives that we are now forced to lead in the Covid era. Keep these coming !

This is such a great truth during this time. I found I have to make a concious effort each week to reach beyond “my go to” friends. One thing that really helps is writing a letter- stamps and all. One thing about the pandemic it has provided plenty of topics: what are you cooking, reading, playing etc. I do try to think of a particular thing I want to share before I reach out- I was thinking about you because….

Tony this is so timely so many of my counseling hours are spent encouraging clients to grant grace….call back even though you called them before. I also am making personal zoom dates and holding family zoom celebrations. I have also initiated safe distancing Sunday talk times with neighbors out in our common driveways . Great article!
